MXene materials are a class of metal carbide and metal nitride materials with two-dimensional layered structure, whose appearance is similar to that of potato chips. The first MXene member was first synthesized in 2011 by Professor Yury Gogotsi of Drexel University in the United States. At present, such materials have attracted worldwide attention in many materials research fields (such as energy, optics, catalysis, etc.).
Professor Yury Gogotsi (Y.G.) : As you may know, the early research of my group was how to use selective etching methods to prepare two-dimensional materials. For example, we looked at silicon carbide as a material. In 2006, in an article published in Nano Lett., our group showed a method to prepare the layered nanosheet structure of silicon carbide with a thickness of only 5-10 nm by partially etching silicon carbide by soaking 3C cubic phase silicon carbide whiskers in a mixed solution of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. [1]
MXene is also one of the two-dimensional products prepared by this selective etching method. In 2000, I started to work with Professor Michel W. Barsoum, the "Father of MAX", after I arrived at Drexel University. MAX is A class of extremely malleable layered ceramic materials, where M represents a Transition Metal, A represents an element of group 13 or Group 14 (author's note: IIIA or IVA), and X represents carbon or nitrogen. [2] Given the layered structure of MAX, I asked Professor Barsoum if his group could prepare single-layer MAX structures or MAX nanotubes. Professor Barsoum gave me a negative answer. This is because the adjacent layers of MAX are held together by strong covalent or metallic bonds, unlike the layers of graphite which are held together by weaker van der Waals forces. The two-dimensional material graphene can be produced by stripping graphite, but the method cannot shake the MAX phase to produce a single layer of MAX. So I had to shelve the idea.
